Buyer's guide · 2026
Product tour software — two different products share the name.
'Product tour software' means in-app onboarding overlays (Appcues, Userpilot, Chameleon) to some buyers and standalone, shareable demos (Tellane, Storylane, Navattic, Arcade) to others. This guide separates them, with dated prices for both.

How this guide is made
Published plans, documented features, linked sources — not a hands-on test
Every price is read from the vendor's public pricing page on August 24, 2026 and recalculated per year on annual billing. Capture methods and plan features come from the same pages; complaints are quoted from named reviews and interviews with a link. We have not run the same demo through every tool and do not claim to. We make Tellane, it is listed under the same rules as the others, and its “not for” list is as long as anyone's.
A product tour is a guided path through a product's screens. Two unrelated kinds of software make one. In-app tour tools inject tooltips, hotspots, and checklists into your live application for signed-in users, and price by monthly active users. Standalone demo tools capture your product and publish a tour anyone can open from a link, with no account, and price by builder seat. Lists that mix the two are comparing a sign-up flow with a pricing page. Decide which viewer you mean — a user inside the product, or a prospect outside it — and the shortlist halves.
Shortlist
Pick by situation
A tour for prospects — website, pricing page, outbound
Standalone lane from screenshots with lead forms, prospect links, and a per-stop funnel; $39 a seat.
A standalone tour with video and hubs too
Three formats; Starter $40 a seat, HTML on Growth.
Before comparing tools
The questions that decide it
Is the viewer signed in?
Yes → an in-app tool (Userpilot, Chameleon, Appcues) or an open-source library. No → a standalone demo tool (Tellane, Storylane, Navattic, Arcade, Supademo, Guideflow).
What does the price scale with?
In-app tools scale with your monthly active users — fine for a small user base, expensive at 100k. Standalone tools scale with builder seats; viewers are free.
Do you need both?
Often. A standalone tour on the pricing page brings people to sign-up; an in-app tour gets them to the first valuable action after it. They are different purchases.
Run it yourself
How to evaluate in an afternoon
The afternoon test for product tour software starts with one question — is the viewer signed in? — and then runs inside the half that survives:
- Decide the viewer: a prospect from a link (standalone) or a user inside your app (in-app). Do not evaluate across the line.
- Standalone: write one eight-stop script, capture it in two free plans, time to published link, drive on a phone, check what the free analytics recorded.
- In-app: count your monthly active users first — MAU pricing is the whole bill — then take the 14-day trials and build one real tour on staging.
- For either: put the result in front of one person from the audience it is for and watch where they stop.
- Price the real numbers: seats for standalone tools, MAUs for in-app tools, against the two tables on this page.

The other meaning
In-app tour tools — for users already inside your product
These render inside your signed-in application and price by monthly active (or tracked) users. Prices read from each vendor's pricing page on the date shown on this page; Appcues publishes tiers but not amounts.
| Tool | Price | Priced by | Trial | Notes |

| Userpilot | Starter $299/mo (up to 2,000 MAU); Growth from $849/mo (2,000 → 100k MAU); Enterprise custom (10k MAU minimum) | Monthly active users | 14 days, no card (Starter) | Flows, spotlights, checklists, NPS, analytics; session replay and A/B tests on Growth; SAML on Enterprise |
| Chameleon | Startup from $279/mo (2,000 MTU); Pro from $750/mo (5k MTU); Growth from $1,250/mo (5k MTU, annual); Enterprise custom | Monthly tracked users | 14 days of full access, no card | Tours, tooltips, launchers, surveys; 10 live experiences on Startup, 20 on Pro, unlimited on Growth |
| Appcues | Not published. Start (up to 3,000 MAU, 10 published experiences), Grow (from 3,000 MAU, 25), Enterprise (100) | MAUs, installations, published experiences | Free trial, no card | Every experience type on every plan; reporting history 12 / 24 / 36 months by tier |
Not this category
What this guide leaves out, and why
- Video tools (Loom, Guidde) — A video is not a tour the viewer steers.
- Documentation tools (Scribe) — Written steps with screenshots; not interactive.
- Open-source tour libraries (Shepherd, driver.js, intro.js) — In-app overlays you build and maintain yourself; free, no capture, no sharing.

FAQ
Questions
What is the best product tour software?
For signed-in users: Userpilot, Chameleon, or Appcues, priced by MAU. For prospects: a standalone demo tool — Tellane, Storylane, Navattic, Arcade — priced by seat. The question hides which viewer you mean.
Is there free product tour software?
Standalone: every demo tool above has a free plan (one to five demos). In-app: Userpilot and Chameleon offer trials, not free plans; the open-source libraries are free and need engineering.
Is there open-source product tour software?
For in-app tours, yes — Shepherd and driver.js (MIT) and intro.js (AGPL with a commercial licence) render step overlays inside your own app. There is no mature open-source tool that captures a product into a shareable standalone tour.
What is guided tour software?
The same category under another name — software that walks a viewer through a product step by step. The in-app/standalone split above applies to it identically.
Where can I see product tour examples?
The examples pages on this site list live, verified tours — including dedicated tour pages and demo landing pages — with what each does well.
Is this guide based on hands-on testing?
No — published pricing (dated), documented features, linked sources. We make Tellane.
