How to create a product demo — and which kind to make.

Three kinds of product demo, when each is right, and how to make the interactive kind in an afternoon. Includes the script structure that works for all three.

The short answer. Pick the format by who controls the pace: a live demo when a seller should adapt to questions, a video when the viewer should watch a short explanation, an interactive demo when the buyer should click through the product themselves. All three start from the same script — outcome, six to ten screens, a call to action — and the interactive kind is the one you can build, publish, and measure in an afternoon.

The three kinds, and who controls the pace

  • Live demo — a seller drives on a call. Adapts to questions; scales to the number of calls a team can run.
  • Demo video — recorded once, watched at the recorded speed. Good for a two-minute overview; cannot answer the question a specific buyer has.
  • Interactive demo — the buyer clicks through captured screens at their own pace, alone. Measurable per step; branches by role; no account needed.

The script is the same for all three

  1. One sentence: the outcome the demo proves.
  2. The audience: which role, which problem.
  3. The opening screen: where the problem is visible.
  4. Six to ten steps as screen → action → what they see.
  5. The call to action: what you want them to do next.
  6. What you will measure: completion, CTA clicks, leads, or booked meetings.

Making the interactive kind

Capture the screens from a demo account with believable data; annotate each stop with a hotspot on the control and one sentence of value; add a branch where two audiences diverge and a lead form past the midpoint if you want contact details; publish; embed. The step-by-step is in the interactive demo guide linked below.

Making the video kind well

Record the same script with a screen recorder, in one take if possible, under two minutes. Say what the buyer gets before you click. Put the result on screen early. Many teams make both: the video for an overview and the interactive demo for the click-through — some tools (Storylane, Arcade, Supademo) produce both from one capture.

Running the live kind

Discovery first: ask what they tried, what broke. Then the script, skipping steps they do not need. End with the next step booked before the call ends, and send an interactive leave-behind of the screens you showed so they can share it internally.
